“The Help” takes an important role in the subject of history, teaches readers the more cruel, and specific things that went down other than what we are most told in grade school, like, just being told that is was mainly “Just slavery, and whipping” or “Something that was normal” now don’t get me wrong, yeah basically the book is about slavery, and not really whipping but everything they went through, probably was just as painful as being whipped. And that stuff, not normal, it shouldn’t have been a “Normal” because that’s just something horrible, it’s something that shouldn’t have been a thing period. So this book is IMPORTANT because this teaches a lot more than what we are told in grade and maybe middle school. I’m glad i read/reading this book. I learned a lot more and i thought a lot more. Thank you Mrs. Tinkham!!
Historical Context
While reading this novel there is a multiple amount of historical contexts throughout the story that is quite outstanding and very specific, giving you a full aspect in what the setting was in 1962.
Chapter 3 page 54 mentioned how Miss Skeeter, a character in the book, whom is a journalist and wants to do a story on the help, their everyday lives, what they go through, and how their treated. When Aibileen tries talking to Minny about when Skeeter asked Aibileen to be in her story, give her answers, she said “Asked do i want to change things, white woman never asked” that line in the story tells how back then white man, or woman, never asked a black man, or woman if they want things to change or be different.
Although Aibileen didn’t get to finish asking/telling Minny about it, you could tell that Aibileen wanted things to change, wanted thing to be different, she wanted to speak up. But the “Power” of Miss Hilly, and just white people overtook her confidence.
The surprising scene in chapter 3 page 51 tells more about how Minny was working more differently with Miss Celia than she worked for Miss Hilly. Through her years, days of working she said “I’ve never told a white woman what to do and i don’t know where to start” Saying that made Minny a bit confused, however she went through with it very well.
Another Reading Day
Hello, so this book is becoming one of my favorite books of all time even though it makes me hate being white and having my blood type literal mayonnaise because i’m just that white :)!
With this book everything becomes so real to me inside my head. The author made it so specific, and bold. When i came across the part in chapter three when Minny was thirteen, her mom was telling her all the rules of being the help for a white family, and it really struck me that the help had to use the same dishes everyday for themselves. They even had their own cabinets and they had to eat by themselves in the kitchen.
Its sad to me that, that was the normal thing back then (Book takes place in 1962) because its so cruel to do that to people. Innocent people, i mean c’mon. Racism is bullshit because if they had to do that for whites back then, they did the good things, they did the hard work, they did what the parents job was (To raise a child) and we look back at today and some people see black women or men as “Ghetto” or “Gang members” we look at them as bad people? The fuck?
Now, i understand that, that was then, and this is now, but i’m saying that black people are not bad people, white people are not bad people, but they were. Doing that, making people do that and not paying enough, disrespecting them, i hate that, i really do. It wasn’t fair then, and it isn’t fair now. There are quotes like, “Be kind” “Be good to people for no reason” and “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody” but those quotes, and all the other million quotes similar to those, people don’t give two shits about? Still? It’s 2019 and society is still a piece of shit.
Chapter 2 & Chapter 3
Over the weekend i watched the movie of “The Help” and i cried a lot. By a lot i literally mean i sleeves were wet from me wiping the tears from under my eyes. I was so irritated with “Ms. Hilly” a rude woman from the story, she got what she deserved. Which is when Minny, the main character (Aibileen) best friend, gave Hilly her shit. By shit i literally mean her actual shit. Minny made a pie with her shit in it, and Ms. Hilly actually ate that shit! I was dead. Even when i got to Chapter 2 when Minny didn’t wanna tell anyone, not even Aibileen that she did that to Hilly and i’m just glad i knew what she was talking about because that shit was funny.
However, i was really upset that back in 1962 when the story takes place, that white children had to be practically raised by the help. It made me upset that “Black people” had to do all the dirty work around the “White people” homes, raise the families children, and having to use a separate bathroom because whites were to scared that they might get “sick”, that’s bullshit.
I’m so glad that everything is different now because that is horrible. People can raise their own children, clean their own homes, and make their own dinner. And everyone is equal, we all got the same skull, heart, brain, nothing is different except the skin color, and personalities. Racism is bullshit to me and i hate it. Everyone is equal. Except Donald Trump hes the very odd one out, he looks like he got lava lamps dumped on him, or he stayed out in the sun to long that he got fucking orange as hell, but God decided to let him be president instead of giving him skin cancer. Why not skin cancer? why?! I don’t care if that’s harsh i hate Donald Trump so much i wish he was constantly falling in an endless hole like Loki was in Infinity War, but he would never come back and he would finally be the least of our fucking problems.
Arylaan wanted this to be called Team ten
Today I started reading “The Help” in class we were told to read it on a book or listen to a audiobook, but 1. I couldn’t get a copy. 2. The last two computers left didn’t wanna fucking work. So I got to read and blog on my phone! So anyone who saw me in Tinkhams class April 10th 2019 on my phone, I had permission so suck it! Haha! Anyway, the start of the book caught my attention like a thesis statement, it got straight to what the book was mostly going to be about, which I like, because sometimes you feel like your starting a book on a complete cliffhanger. I love how the author made it seem like the we were reading into the main characters mind, even with the improper grammar, I felt like I was already getting to “know” this person only a few sentences in.
Why I’m lazy!
Honestly, at first i really didn’t wanna read anything, or do this project, but whats new? I came to my dramatic ass senses and picked a novel. If i’m being real, if we have to read books that also have a movie, why can’t we just watch the movie? It might miss a few parts that are in the novel, however i really feel like that would be easier, and definitely not because i’m just that lazy……who am i kidding i really am fucking lazy not gonna lie.
Advanced L.A has been a huge pain in my ass, so just to add more pain, well damn. Oh well, that’s life, that’s school. If you know me well enough you know that i am the most careless, lazy, and extremely odd person. I’m lazy to do school work but i could care less if i don’t wanna do it, i end up doing it because, as we all know, we have to do it. I do have to say though, i do my work in an odd, or different way, and i’m not talking about how i sometimes….or always turn my crap in late, i’m talking about how i change up the rules or i guess “How to” because its like “Why do it like that when i can do it like this?” also, i think “what the actual fuck”. Anyway, you get the gist, so welcome to my Blog for the novel, “The Help”. Enjoy, or whatever.
